Mo Magic Weekly — Issue #37: 🔄 Get Back Up

Hey Friends 👋

I’ve been thinking a lot this week about mistakes.

Not just the big ones.

The small ones too.

The decisions we second-guess.
The things we try that don’t come out exactly right.
The moments when we look back and think, “Yeah… I probably could have handled that better.”

I’ve made plenty of mistakes in my life.

Some had serious consequences. Some were harmless. Some turned into lessons. And some, honestly, I’m still not sure about yet.

But one thing I’ve learned is this:

A mistake doesn’t have to be the end of the story.

You can adjust.
You can learn.
You can recover.
You can try again.

This week gave me a few reminders of that.

I ordered postcards that turned out to be way smaller than I expected, so for now I’m basically using them as oversized business cards. 😂

I posted a magic video that I knew wasn’t my smoothest work, just to see how people would react. The comments were mixed, but the video ended up reaching more than 40,000 people.

And I’m still figuring out whether leaving my part-time job was the right move. I don't have that answer yet, but I do know the situation wasn't working for me anymore.

That’s life sometimes.

We make the best decision we can, learn from what happens next, and keep moving forward.

So this week, I’m not focused on being perfect.

I’m focused on getting back up, learning something, and continuing to build.

🏙️ NEW HAVEN —

I've been spending more time walking around downtown New Haven lately.

Part of it is simple—I enjoy the exercise and getting out of the house. But it's also a great way to stay connected with the city and the people in it.

I run into people I know, meet new people, talk with local business owners, and share what I've been working on with CodeBreeze Solutions and Mo Magic. I've also been carrying my new business cards, so when a conversation naturally leads there, I have something to hand someone.

And, of course, sometimes a deck of cards comes out too. 😂

I'm also starting to notice Yale students returning and downtown getting busier again. There's a different energy in New Haven when the students come back, and it's nice seeing the city start to fill up again.

For me, it's really about staying connected.

You never know when a simple conversation turns into a new friendship, a business connection, a magic opportunity, or just an interesting conversation with someone you wouldn't have met otherwise.

Sometimes the best thing you can do is get out, be part of your community, meet people, and see where life takes you.

🎩 MAGIC —

This was a fun week for magic.

I got together with my friends and fellow magicians Tony Spero and Thom Dunlap from Norwalk, CT. We spent some time practicing, sharing ideas, talking magic, and yes... maybe sharing a few secrets too. 🪄

Thank you, Tony and Thom! It's always great spending time with other magicians because there's always something new to learn—and usually something I realize I need to practice a little more. 😂

I also had a chance to perform a rubber band trick for a couple of Yale graduate students who are getting ready to leave New Haven and begin the next chapter of their lives.

It was one of those spontaneous moments I love about magic. A few people, a couple of rubber bands, and suddenly everyone stops for a minute to watch something impossible happen.

Behind the scenes, I've also been learning some new tricks and working on V2 of momagic.net.

I'm rebuilding the website with more of a focus on performances, events, and making it easier for people to learn about Mo Magic and get in touch.

Magic continues to remind me of something that applies to almost everything else I'm doing right now:

There's always another move to learn, another skill to improve, and another version to build.

💰 MONEY —

I've gotten pretty good at buying when prices are down.

What I'm still learning is how to sell when they're up. 😂

I've taken a few round trips on solid investments. Gold, silver, Bitcoin, and others gave me opportunities to take profits, but sometimes I held through the spike and watched prices come back down.

I still believe in many of those investments. The lesson for me isn't necessarily to sell everything. It's to take some profit when an investment makes a big move—maybe 25% or 50%—and keep the rest invested.

I'm also grateful that I've learned the difference between an asset and a liability and have made a conscious effort to choose assets whenever I can.

I'm certainly still learning and still making mistakes.

Buying low takes discipline.

I'm learning that selling high does too.

This is just my personal experience and what I'm learning along the way—not financial advice.

One of the biggest misconceptions about websites is that once they're built, the work is finished.

Launch it. Put it online. Forget about it.

But a good small business website should grow along with the business.

Your services change. You earn new reviews. You create new content. Your customers ask different questions. Even the way people find businesses online changes.

That doesn't mean you need to redesign your website every few months.

Instead, focus on keeping your information accurate, adding useful content, checking that everything works, and making small improvements over time.

For local businesses, this can also help strengthen your online presence. Clear service information, helpful content, accurate business details, and a well-maintained Google Business Profile all help customers—and search engines—better understand what your business offers.

Test one thing at a time.

If your website isn't getting the results you want, don't change everything at once.

Try changing one headline, one call-to-action, one photo, or one button. Then give it some time and see what happens.

When you change five things at once, you won't know which change actually made the difference.

Small businesses don't need huge marketing experiments.

Sometimes one small test can teach you a lot.

Proverbs 24:16 (NIV)

“For though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again, but the wicked stumble when calamity strikes.”

I love this verse because it doesn't say we will never fall.

We will.

I've made mistakes in my life—some small and some that changed my life completely. And I still make mistakes today.

But when I look at how far I've come, I don't take the credit.

I give the glory to God.

God gave me another chance. He gave me strength to get back up, people who encouraged me, and opportunities to keep rebuilding.

I'm still learning. I'm still growing. And I certainly don't have everything figured out.

But my faith isn't in my ability to always get it right.

My faith is in Jesus Christ.

When I fall, by God's grace, I get back up.

All glory to God.

Mistakes are part of life.

Some we can fix.
Some we learn from.
And some take time before we understand them.

What matters is what we do next.

Learn. Adjust. Keep moving forward.

And when you fall, get back up.
